For gas marks below 1 type 0.5 or 0.25.

Celsius = (Fahrenheit − 32) × 5 ÷ 9. Fahrenheit = Celsius × 9 ÷ 5 + 32. “On the dial” is the exact figure rounded to the nearest 10 °C, which is how Celsius recipes write it.

For marks 1 to 9: gas mark = (Fahrenheit − 250) ÷ 25. A temperature between two marks shows the nearest one. This page converts between scales only; it does not adjust for fan (convection) ovens.

Questions, answered.

What is 350 °F in Celsius?

350 °F is 176.7 °C. Recipes written in Celsius round it to 180 °C. On a gas oven it is gas mark 4.

What is 180 °C in Fahrenheit?

180 °C is 356 °F. On a Fahrenheit dial use 350 °F, the closest standard setting.

How does the gas mark scale work?

Gas mark 1 is 275 °F and each mark above it adds 25 °F, up to gas mark 9 at 475 °F. Below 1 there are two fractional settings: ½ at 250 °F and ¼ at 225 °F.

Do I need to change the temperature for a fan (convection) oven?

Many oven makers suggest setting a fan oven about 25 °F (about 15 to 20 °C) lower than a recipe written for a conventional oven, or keeping the temperature and checking for doneness earlier. Your oven manual has the figure for your model. This converter does not apply that change: it only translates between scales.

Why does my cake bake faster or slower than the recipe says?

Oven dials are often off by 15 to 25 °F. An inexpensive oven thermometer on the middle rack, read after the oven has preheated for 20 minutes, tells you how far yours runs from the dial so you can set it to match.
